Caddie Scholar Prep

At the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation, we are dedicated to growing and promoting youth caddying across the country and providing promising caddies with the life-changing opportunity of the Evans Scholarship.

About Caddie Scholar Prep

Caddie Scholar Prep is a youth development program that provides employment and mentoring opportunities for students across the country. Through the program, young men and women gain valuable summer employment as golf caddies, develop leadership and life skills, and have the opportunity to earn the Evans Scholarship, a full tuition and housing college scholarship.

The WGA manages Caddie Scholar Prep, working closely with schools and community organizations to recruit, train and mentor students.

How it Works

Enrollment

Students typically begin the program as eighth or ninth graders. Participants have excellent grades, show leadership ability and have demonstrated financial need. Along with their families, they make a commitment to take part in the program throughout high school.

Caddie Training

Through the WGA’s network of partner golf clubs and regional golf organizations, participants learn to caddie through multi-session training experiences.

Mentoring and Development

Volunteer leaders, golfers and program supporters mentor participants by providing guidance and helping develop leadership and life skills. Students also participate in academic prep and college readiness training to prepare them for the Evans Scholarship application process.

Benefits of Caddying

The Caddie Scholar Prep program represents a unique learning opportunity for ambitious young people with the desire to achieve. Some of the lifelong benefits of the program include:

  • Flexible Hours and Great Income: Caddying provides flexibility so that participants can earn part-time income while continuing to be involved in school, sports and other summer activities.
  • Education and Leadership Prep: Participants will be equipped to navigate the challenges of high school academics and college applications through in-person and virtual year-round training, along with college and career workshops. In addition, the program will help monitor both academic and social progress and offer support as needed. As Caddie Scholar Prep participants progress through the program, they will in turn become peer mentors to students beginning the program, helping build self-esteem and a strong sense of community.
  • Social Emotional Development: Participants are paired with golfers who embrace the mentoring aspect of the program. The caddies learn important life skills and are provided a wonderful opportunity to interact and learn from successful individuals who can provide guidance and support in a safe environment.
  • Health and Fitness: With childhood and teen obesity reaching crisis levels, particularly in communities with limited outdoor recreational activities, caddying provides young people a way to get exercise and promotes a healthy lifestyle. The average participant logs more than 400,000 steps each summer.
