Caddie from Massachusetts earns full college scholarship

Will begin college this fall as a Ouimet Evans Scholar

GLENVIEW, Ill. – A student from Wellesley, Mass., has been awarded a prestigious full housing and tuition college scholarship offered to golf caddies, following a final selection interview held Feb. 9.

Wellesley Senior High School Student Luke Quinn will begin college this fall as an Ouimet Evans Scholar at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The scholarship is valued at an estimated $120,000 over four years.

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund and the Evans Scholars Foundation annually co-sponsor full tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving caddies from Massachusetts. They are awarded to applicants who demonstrate a strong caddie record, excellent academics, financial need and outstanding character. Candidates must meet the qualifications of both the Ouimet Fund and the Evans Scholars Foundation to earn the Scholarship.

Quinn, who caddied at Wellesley Country Club, said his summer job helped him develop confidence and courage. “Caddying has allowed me to branch out and make new connections and relationships with many individuals,” he said. “There is a sense of community and camaraderie among caddies, and it has allowed me to break out of my comfort zone.”

“Luke has shown dedication, hard work and sacrifice, and we are honored to help him pursue his dreams of a college education,” said WGA Chairman Kevin Buggy.

“We are proud of Luke for his dedication as a caddie and in the classroom, and it is special to see him earn this distinct honor,” said Jim Moriarty, President of the Ouimet Fund. “We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Evans Scholars Foundation for this special offering to local youth caddies.”

The selection meeting was one of more than 20 such meetings the Evans Scholars Foundation will hold virtually nationwide through the spring. When the 2020-21 selection meeting process is completed by April, 300 caddies across the country are expected to be awarded the Evans Scholarship.
