Scholars visit Chicago for 67th annual Winter Meeting
GOLF, IL - The 67th annual Evans Scholars Winter Meeting, held Saturday, Feb. 2, at the University of Illinois-Chicago, featured the results of the New Scholar Academic Competition and seminars on diversity and inclusion and health and wellness by two notable Evans Scholars Alumni.
For the first time ever, the Roland F. “Mac” McGuigan Academic Trophy was awarded to the three New Scholar classes, with Northwestern, Notre Dame and Washington all earning an outstanding 3.6 cumulative GPA for the fall 2018 semester.
The annual grade competition recognizes each Evans Scholars chapter whose New Scholar (freshmen) class achieves above a cumulative 3.0 GPA for the fall semester. The class with the highest GPA wins the Program’s coveted Roland F. “Mac” McGuigan Trophy, named in honor of the Evans Scholars Program’s legendary educational director, who served in his role for 40 years.
Following the morning meeting, the newly elected leaders from each chapter participated in workshop sessions to exchange ideas and best practices.
John Singer, a Michigan State Evans Scholar Alum and an associate dean at Texas A&M University, lead a discussion about diversity and inclusion within Evans Scholarship Houses. The afternoon concluded with Kansas Evans Scholar Alum Dr. Kevin Most speaking to Scholars about the importance of mental health and physical wellness.
The annual Evans Scholars basketball tournament was played later that night at the University of Illinois Chicago recreation center. The Evans Scholars from the University of Wisconsin won the men's half of the basketball tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The Purdue University Evans Scholars bested the field in the women's tournament.
