Trophy awarded for academic excellence in first semester

GLENVIEW, Ill. – The New Scholar class from the University of Notre Dame was named the winner of the Roland F. “Mac” McGuigan Trophy, earning an outstanding 3.7 cumulative GPA for the fall 2023 semester. The award has been given annually since 1962 to recognize the Program’s New Scholar (freshman) class for academic excellence in their first semester.

The classes from University of Illinois, Ohio State University and Purdue University tied for second with an impressive 3.6 GPA. The average fall GPA for all New Scholars was a 3.3.

“We congratulate Notre Dame and all our New Scholars for their hard work and academic dedication,” said Brian Shell, vice president of education. “We look forward to seeing what this class of Scholars will continue to accomplish in the classroom and on campus over the next few years.”
